This CTCP Module is your first step on a journey of critical appraisal and self-development. It offers you an inclusive model of chiropractic that draws upon the accumulated wisdom of the past, the empirical observations of our technique developers and the accountability and clarifications that modern science can give us. It is a mechanism of thinking. Quite simply, it will help you clarify what you do at a whole new level.
It is now well recognised that the effects of chiropractic go beyond the mechanical. Indeed, most chiropractors would not be happy at the thought of restricting their scope of practice to the simple treatment of back pain. The emerging world of functional neurology has allowed chiropractors to explain many of their observations in contemporary language and using principles of physiology that cannot be disputed. Crucial to this process of documenting chiropractic science is an understanding of how the nervous system actually works - the pursuit of which requires an intimate knowledge of its fundamental building blocks.
Whether you realise it or not, you are using a conceptual framework to define and direct what you do. However, every day new evidence accrues that either supports or undermines your personal ‘truths’ and your rationale for care. In this ever-changing world you need new skills - skills of observation, skills of appraisal, skills of technique and, most importantly, skills of judgment. The ability to think critically and apply your knowledge is the bedrock of the successful clinician, whether chiropractic or allopathic. You need a model of chiropractic that engages you with its vision of possibility and allows you to test your methods using the direction that science provides. Your model must honour the complexity and individuality of every person and every nervous system, and you must become comfortable within the boundaries of the known, and the unknown.
This Module emphasises the role of neurological mechanisms in the control of spinal alignment, posture and joint stability. It will offer you clarity on how a targeted mechanical force impacts on human neurological function. A deeper appreciation of the relevant neuroscience will highlight that loss of appropriate curvatures in the spine and asymmetrical tone of the soft tissues that stabilise the spine are representative of neurological activity. Chiropractors must become highly skilled in assessing the neurological systems at a functional level and this Module will help you to do this.
