MODULE 3 - HEADACHE

Module 3 will take your understanding of headache, and in particular the disease migraine, to a whole new level. Learn about the myriad of neurological signs and symptoms that accompany this condition and how you can play a front line role in patient management. This Module delves even more deeply into the neurology of chiropractic to enhance your clinical thinking and equip you with tools of assessment.

Headache pain is the third most common reason why a patient will come to see you. After all, it’s fairly obvious that a neck problem can cause a headache, isn’t it? But how exactly does this occur? What makes a migraineur a migraineur, and how does it affect the nervous system beyond the obvious head pain? The biggest trap in managing migraine is thinking that it is just a spine problem. Migraine is a complex neurological disease with many autonomic features, most of which you are probably unaware of.

Learn how to thoroughly assess the migraine patient and determine the optimum course of care for each individual. Migraine patients need lifelong management and you can be the expert in their care. This Module will show you all of this and more. So join Dr Matthew Long for an inspiring weekend that will change how you think and how you practice.

SOPHISTICATED DIAGNOSIS
BECOME A TRUE EXPERT IN HEADACHE
In this Module we will look at how a migraineur's brain is different. You will come to understand the abnormal brain chemistry that makes them hypersensitive to most stimuli - whether external or internal. You will appreciate that migraine is a 'continuum disorder', sharing the same neurological underpinnings as irritable bowel, depression, restless legs syndrome and temporomandibular disorder. Furthermore, we will investigate the concept of 'paediatric migraine equivalents' - a phenomenon in which children exhibit all manner of symptoms such as vertigo or abdominal pain, instead of headache.

During this weekend you will learn how migraine, tension-type headache and cervicogenic headache differ, and the specific management strategies that work best for each patient type. We will consider the role of adjustments in managing headache, and learn when you should, and shouldn't, adjust the neck. We shall also examine the science supporting the role of supplementation in headache management. Does any of it make a difference?

Finally, we will look at how you should explain your approach to a patient's GP, so that they understand what you are actually doing.
CPD POINTS AWARDED
This program has been submitted for categorisation by CAA National for 13.5 formal learning hours (FLA).
