INTENSIVE 7 - DIAGNOSIS & MANAGEMENT OF BALANCE DISORDERS

Intensive 7 focuses upon the neurology of balance and postural control. We will refine your skills in assessing and managing patients with dizziness, vertigo and a range of other balance disorders. Learn how the extraordinary proprioceptive capacity of the cervical spine plays a central role in human stability and why many ongoing spinal problems could be viewed as a subtle expression of a balance disorder.

Anxiety, visual disturbances, muscle tension - all can be the product of a struggling balance system. But a static X-ray does not do justice to the exquisite control necessary to guide 24 movable vertebrae without injury. So how is this done? And what happens when it all goes wrong?

Dr Anthony Nicholson will begin with a practical introduction to the vestibular system, and unveil the latest understandings in the neurology of balance and posture. Then you will work through 4 relevant cases to help you appreciate the extent to which the balance system underpins everything you do as a chiropractor. You learn every day through solving problems with your patients. So we will teach you in the same way.

Understanding the Vestibular System
THE NEUROLOGY OF CHIROPRACTIC
The vestibular system is central to the practice of chiropractic. In this Intensive you will appreciate the neurological basis of spinal alignment and stability - why do patients lose their spinal curves? We will then develop a protocol to investigate a patient’s posture, balance and their vestibular system.

When you assess a patient’s spine and posture, you are looking directly at their ability to orientate themselves in their environment. So it helps to understand what a head tilt might be telling you, and how this might correlate with altered eye movements, or the mechanical lesions present in their spinal joint system.

This weekend will enhance your skills in diagnosing benign positional vertigo, and in performing the various head positioning manoeuvres (such as the Epley manoeuvre) that can alleviate this common condition. We will equip you with tools of assessment and patient exercises to break through in disorders of disturbed orientation where previous approaches have failed.

This seminar will open yours eyes to the role that migraine has as a common cause of vertigo, particularly in children. We will also investigate how whiplash can produce dizziness, and how you should assess and treat these patients. Finally, we will delve into the topic of scoliosis and understand the role of the brain in spinal curvature - and what you can do about it.

We will take a structured approach to understanding dizziness and vertigo, and provide you with the practical tools necessary to treat balance disorders at both the pathological and performance ends of the spectrum. As such, this Intensive is one of CDI’s most popular.
