INTENSIVE 8 - PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION

Intensive 8 is about building the referral relationships that form the cornerstone of professional practice. Being a professional involves more than simply doing a good job. You must be able to communicate the nature of what you are doing, and the benefits of your unique skills, if you want to gain greater influence. This seminar draws upon the science of communication to add an important dimension to your professional development and personal effectiveness.

It is an unfortunate truth that most GPs do not see you as a referral option for their patients. But you should not take this personally. After all, they do not know you. In most circumstances the general practitioner is simply making a choice based upon their best available information. The trouble is, most GPs cannot imagine a circumstance in which you are the solution to any patient's problem.

In the Professional Communication Intensive we will look closely at how GPs view the spine, and how they assess their patients. You will come to understand that our medical colleagues do not see the world through the same lens as you. Indeed, in their world you are largely irrelevant. The trouble is, as patients become more informed they are actually seeing their GPs more often, to help them navigate the minefield of available information. You must therefore position yourself as a trusted expert in the field of the spine and nervous system - a resource that the GP can turn to.

This Intensive will arm you with the tools necessary to take charge of your message, and to demonstrate your unique expertise.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF COMMUNICATION
A huge conceptual divide exists between chiropractors and medical practitioners. GPs simply do not see manipulation as a neurological modality - it is seen as purely a mechanical treatment. As such, any claims to alter or improve neurological function are ignored or dismissed, as the gap in understanding is too large. So if we want to build a sense of value for what we can do as clinicians we need to find a way to bridge this perceptual gap, using language that is appropriate and understood.

The way you present yourself is critical to how you are perceived. It starts with your practice name, your logo and your letterhead. After this, it encompasses how you communicate in the written word, and ultimately how you express yourself. This seminar challenges you to use language as a vehicle for building trust, and it will give you an opportunity to define what you do. Your words allow you to create compelling arguments that will support your clinical decision-making, and the care of your patients. So we shall take a long hard look at how you present yourself to the general public, and to the wider health care community. It’s an exercise in fashioning and refining your image.

But this Intensive is not just about sending reports. Whilst presenting yourself well in writing is impressive, to solidify a relationship requires a personal connection - so you must also be adept at communicating on the telephone. We will look at the common questions that arise, and strategies for giving effective answers.
CPD POINTS AWARDED
This program has been assessed by the Australian Chiropractors Association, a body recognised by the Chiropractic Board of Australia, and allocated 7.5 CPD hours.

It has also been recognised by the International Academy of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (IANM) for 7.5 hours of board certification-level education.
